Measuring Values

Some researchers have made efforts to construct general measures for values, whether personal, organizational, or even societal, and some of these measures are available online for free, while others come with paid fees. This is undoubtedly a commendable effort, but it may not accurately achieve the goal of measuring organizational values because it is a general measurement, and mostly measuring the level of interest in values, and they might mix personal values with organizational values—what an individual adopts for themselves and what a worker adopts from the value system of the institution they work for.

Series of articles on values (Article 3: Foundational Values - Fundamental Issues)

More importantly, measuring the existence, strength, or weakness of values requires a valid and reliable tool constructed with statements based on the dimensions and details of values, and this can only be achieved after analysing values into their main and sub-components, based on this, the dimensions of the scale are determined and for the measurement process to be comprehensive for all elements of the organizational environment, it must include, in addition to individuals, workers, and leaders, the organizational environment itself, as well as the institution's clients. This also means that these measures should be compatible with the targeted institution's activities, consider its specificity, and not be general measures applied to every institution and its employees. These measures vary into four types:

  • Personal Values Scale in General
  • Organizational Values Scale for Employees
  • Inspiration and Modelling Scale for Leaders
  • Requirements of Values in the Organizational Environment Scale

Most values scales measure interest rather than
application.

That framework, with its four dimensions for each sub-value and core value, is raw material not meant for immediate practical application; rather, it serves as a reference container from which specialized consultants choose the institutional values they study, they then conduct reconciliation processes with the nature of the institution's work, fundamental employee characteristics, the general context, and carry out experimental application procedures. Finally, they apply them to relevant entities.

The following is a simplified self-assessment scale for values-based organizational culture that you can respond to and evaluate the status of your institution, and we suggest you respond to any other scale for measuring values that you find published on websites to understand the differences between personal values and organizational values. Dear leader, the pioneers' company for value building has developed, based on its scientific methodology, a preliminary diagnostic tool aimed at supporting institutions in identifying their values' reality and obtaining initial suggestions for improvement. Therefore, we invite you to use this tool to receive a report on the reality of the values-based organizational culture and initial suggestions suitable for your institution.

The accurate measurement of values is the measurement that includes all relevant stakeholders.
